Pasadena is ranked as the second largest city in Harris County, Texas, and the 15th largest city in the state of Texas. The city's founder, John H. Burnett, named Pasadena after its namesake in California because the land's rich vegetation reminded him of the lush California city. Pasadena is known as the "Strawberry Capital of the South" because of the plump, sweet strawberries that are grown in this town. One of the most popular events in Pasadena is the Strawberry Festival, an annual even that honors the history of the strawberry and the events that led to its evolution into big business locally. In 1900, the Galveston Hurricane forced many people to resettle in Pasadena to start over. The American Red Cross's Clara Barton bought 1.5 million strawberry plants and shipped them to Pasadena to help these victims rebuild their lives. The strawberry plants grew so well that the town came to the point of shipping as much as 28 carloads of strawberries daily. This caused an economic boom that is celebrated to this day by residents who have purchased homes for sale in Pasadena, Texas.
