SHORE ACRES HISTORY:
The first homes were built in 1925 in what was known then as the Shoreacres Country Club subdivision. A short time thereafter, country homes designed with plenty of windows for the ocean breeze were built on the wooded sea coast tracts. In an effort to enhance the country club atmosphere, Shoreacres, Inc. donated six acres of bay front property in 1927 to be the site of the Houston Yacht Club which is still Shoreacres' sole business establishment. With the increasing population, Shoreacres was incorporated as a city in November of 1962. Currently the City of Shoreacres population is approximately 1700 people, but the City still retains its resort-like atmosphere. The small country town ambiance acts as a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the neighboring large cities.
Shoreacres is a community where neighbors still know each other and are active participants in community functions and organizations. With environmentally conscious citizens, Shoreacres residents are eager to take part in programs that promote the cleanliness of Galveston Bay, the protection of wetlands, and the preservation of natural resources and wildlife. Designated as a bird sanctuary, the City of Shoreacres prides itself on the large variety of species that inhabit the local waters, estuaries, and forest areas.
The city of Shoreacres is a General Law City with a Mayor and five Council members elected to two year terms. City Hall acts as a court house, council chambers, meeting room, police station, and administrative building, providing a central location for citizens.
Shoreacres would again like to extend a neighborly welcome to newcomers and hope you enjoy living in this fine community.
