If you're looking for an affluent, family-friendly part of Houston, look no further than West University real estate. Houston is a dynamically diverse city that is growing by leaps and bounds, which is why areas of the city are designated with neighborhood or community names. Additionally, many cities in and around Houston are often mistakenly included in the city of Houston, and West University Place is one such example of this. The city of West University Place, also called West University or simply "West U," is bounded by Kirby Drive to the east, the Union Pacific St. Louis Southwestern Railway railroad tracks to the west, Bissonet and Law Streets to the north, and Bellaire Boulevard to the south.

West University Houston homes are located in the region of the city known as the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown Metropolitan Area, part of Harris County. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, homes in West University Houston were occupied by around 14,000 residents, but that number is expected to have risen considerably since last count. The neighborhood of West University is sometimes called "The Neighborhood City," as the area primarily serves as a bedroom community for affluent families who work in the Houston area. West University real estate is surrounded by Houston, Bellaire and Southside Place, providing an abundance of employment opportunities to people who choose to live in West University Houston homes.

A Brief History of West University

The neighborhood was first established in 1917 by Ben Hooper, former governor of Tennessee. Thanks to its close proximity to Rice University (then known as Rice Institute), the name "West University Place" was aptly chosen. Even today, you'll find that many street names in the neighborhood refer to universities and colleges throughout the nation. Because of the City of Houston's reluctance to extend power lines this far out of the city center, West University Place incorporated in 1924, and later refused to be annexed by the City of Houston. Today, West University Place maintains its own separate city charter. Another reason for the apparent confusion (as to whether or not West University is technically part of Houston proper), is because the United States Postal Service often uses "Houston" as the city designation for all West University real estate near Houston. Naturally, if you include "West University Place" as the city on any piece of mail destined for the city of West University, you can expect that your letter or package will be delivered appropriately.

West University real estate in Houston is highly desirable, and homes here tend to sell quickly. Whether this can be attributed to the fact that West U covers a geographic area of only two square miles, or rather, because the city is the ninth wealthiest location in Texas (according to per capita income), West University Houston homes are nonetheless a sound investment.
